When Cost Is the Deciding Factor

For many homeowners, cost is the first thing on the table, and Katherine’s answers put it front and center. What a system costs depends on its size, the equipment chosen and how it is paid for, whether with cash or financing. Our guide to how much solar panels cost walks through the main factors, and our solar loan article explains how financing works for homeowners who would rather not pay up front.

How Micro-Inverters Handle a 12-Panel Roof

Solar panels produce direct current, and a home runs on alternating current. With micro-inverters, that conversion happens right at the panel instead of in one central box. On this roof, Enphase IQ8M units mounted under the array do the work. Because each panel operates on its own, shade or dust on one panel has less effect on the others, and the system can be monitored panel by panel.
