Solar Plus Battery Backup, Working Together
Pairing solar panels with a battery gives a home more control over how its energy is used. During the day, the panels turn sunlight into electricity for the home, and the Tesla Powerwall 3 can store energy so it is available when the sun is not shining. Because the system is grid-tied, the home stays connected to the utility while the battery provides backup power. It is a combination that suits homeowners who want to produce and manage more of their own energy.
How the Pieces Fit Together
The 40 Jinko 430-watt panels on the home’s concrete tile roof make up the 17.2 kW solar array. The Powerwall 3 combines battery storage with an integrated solar inverter, which keeps the equipment list simple and puts a major system component in one place. Together, the panels, battery and grid connection let the homeowner produce energy on site while keeping the reliability of a utility connection.
