“Food for Sunshine” Program

2020 was a year unlike any year in modern times. COVID-19 swept the world, forcing us to redefine “normal”. People who worked for businesses that were deemed “unessential” were either furloughed or laid-off, while “essential” workers were overworked, underpaid, and put at risk of contracting this deadly virus.

“Hunger” is not a problem most people associate with the United States. However, food insecurity is a much larger issue than you might think. According to Feeding America, COVID has had a startling impact in our own communities. More than 50 million people (nearly 1 in 6), including approximately 17 million children (1 in 4), will have experienced food insecurity in 2020.

In Flagstaff, the Flagstaff Family Food Center has been helping meet local needs for more than 28 years. In nearly 3 decades, they have never seen as much need as in 2020. The Flagstaff Family Food Center services increased by nearly 40% over 2019, providing nearly 5.5 million pounds through mobil pantries, emergency food boxes and new programs such as home delivery services in one year.

“The Flagstaff Family Food Center does such important work in our community,” said Rooftop Solar partner and former Food Center Board President. “Last year was challenging for so many people. We are lucky at Rooftop Solar to work in an exciting, growing and meaningful industry. Many of our employees have donated or volunteered at our local food bank and we wanted to more as a company. The “Food for Sunshine” program is just one small way we can help give back.”

Rooftop Solar is proud to partner with local food banks like Flagstaff Family Food Center, to work toward a stronger, more sustainable community. For every person, family or company that goes solar with the company, Rooftop Solar will donate 25 meals to help overcome food insecurity.

Whether you are in Northern Arizona, Central Arizona, Phoenix or San Diego, there are great organizations working to help end hunger:

Flagstaff – Flagstaff Family Food Center

Prescott Valley – Yavapai County Food Bank

Phoenix Metro – St Mary’s Food Bank

San Diego – Loaves & Fishes
